Symbian, Windows Mobile, Linux - which is faster?
SMAPE  News  Symbian, Windows Mobile, Linux - which is faster?

Nokia is planning to employ hardware support for 2D graphics and data encoding/decoding.

“Nokia pays attention to the information that Symbian is slower than its competing operating systems” – said Lee Williams, Senior Vice President in Nokia’s Devices software organization.

The Futuremark’s independent performance testing was revealed at S60 Summit held on May 28-29 in Barcelona. According to the results of the testing Symbian gave a good account of itself in 3D graphics accelerating, but yielded to Windows Mobile 6 and Linux in 2D and mp3 decoding tests (See the table below).

“Different operating systems have different capabilities and this explains the results. This does not mean that there is a need for radical changes in Symbian. There are other ways for speeding up the performance. We plan to add hardware acceleration for 2D graphics and decoding MP3 music. We need this since we are looking to empower our handsets to play hundreds of hours MP3 music.” - stated Mr. Williams.

Besides, a question was raised as to the company’s plans to support the symmetrical multiprocessing technology (SMP), as one more way to improve the performance and provide flexible power consumption at the same time. “We have been working for a while on SMP support.” - noted Mr. Williams.
