The EU and mobile content
SMAPE  News  The EU and mobile content

The European Commission has finished checking 500 websites in the 27 states of the EU as well as in Norway and Iceland that are engaged in selling mobile content. The check-up was initiated after repeated complaints from the consumers.

EU Consumer Commissioner Meglena Kuneva reported that 466 sites were, one way or another, breaking the law. The European Commission’s report says that:

  • 54% of the checked websites were illegally overpricing their services
  • 67% of the sites offered misleading information
  • 80% of the websites failed to provide full contact information

Besides, the following law violations were found: some web resources didn’t indicate prices, didn’t inform users that they are actually signing up for a subscription and so on.

As a result of public pressure, the UK’s phone regulator PhonepayPlus (PPP) introduces new rules regulating the user-provider interactions. Now those sites that prevent users from stopping their services easily and quickly will be immediately shut down.
