Nokia S60 3rd Edition Feature Pack 2

Nokia company offers S60 3rd Edition Feature Pack 2 as its main platform on the smartphone market. Four devices have already been announced at the Mobile World Congress '2008. It doesn't mean that we won't see any devices based on S60 FP1 released further. There are a few releases ahead, but there won't be many of them. By the most part Nokia smartphones are based on FP2. The basic platform functionality is standard for completely different devices. Applications have also been left without any overpatching. That is why we are going to review the functions common for all S60 smart phones on the example of Nokia N78, being the first device based on the FP2 platform available on the market.

Main specs

The initial difference, actually the most obvious thing in comparison with the previous devices based on the old platform is the new appearance of the stand-by mode. It is now informative up to the limit. The next important change is that it is possible to call up the recently launched applications list from any menu by pressing left soft key. The menu item "Display all running applications" comes first in the pop-up menu. The new horizontal orientation of this list is friendlier to the new platform users. And, finally, there is a three-button interface available. The interface was initially arranged like this. The middle confirm/select button isn't originally bound to any particular task, however all the associated actions have been left unchanged. These improvements are just the most obvious ones. In real life, there are much more useful changes that make the handling easier. A full-fledged Caller ID function or the convenient Gallery add-on as well as a lot of other things may surely be assumed as big advantages of the platform so we will be thoroughly reviewing the matter in the later sections of the article.

Active stand-by mode

Active stand-by mode was initially introduced in the 6680/6681 models based on the S60 platform. The quick launch list (from 5 to 8 shortcuts, depending on screen layout and resolution), current day's events and player status indicator were the only options included into this feature. Later the active stand-by mode appeared in Series40. This leads to an interesting situation – some of the casual phones partially excelled smartphones since this mode was more functional in Series40.

The main difference is that it is possible to engage a few additional modules while in this mode. In other words, it is possible to select an application that will be display on the desktop in the active stand-by mode. There are no such extra features in Eseries FP2 devices.

There are three options available in the settings menu. These are Basic (no applications shortcuts and the bottom bar comprises a number of small labels indicating the key functions as they apply in that particular menu), standard (list of shortcuts), and navigation panel. The active stand-by mode in its standard presentation displays a horizontal list of shortcuts for a number of applications. The number of shortcuts is limited since there is no way for srolling the list unlike in Series40. It is also possible to add a custom shortcut. This is quite convenient since you don't have to call the program that you run frequently through the traditional menu (mobile ICQ client, for instance).

Nokia S60 Feature Pack 2 Nokia S60 Feature Pack 2

Nokia S60 Feature Pack 2 Nokia S60 Feature Pack 2

The latter option (Navigation bar) is the most informative one. In this case, there is a vertical list of shortcuts. A list of actions or status window is always shown after pointing at the shortcut (for example, what track is played at the moment or whether the transmitter is active). And the appearance of such an informative active stand-by mode is considered as a big advantage of FP2 over the previous versions.

Search

The search option is one of the features native to the active stand-by mode. Now it is possible to search within the device and browse the Internet. The interface has been changed a little bit in comparison with other smartphones, switching to a more user-friendly look. The screen has been divided into two: content search and web browsing. A text of any length may be written in the search input box which is located at the bottom of the input box. At the same time name of the file or folder that coincides with the written text or a word or phrase containing in the file is displayed with the different font. The folder containing the file can be opened by shifting the navigation button to the right.

There are several advanced options like category search. The search mode can be configured in order to get the best result or it is possible to leave everything to the default search options or even do the search within the contacts or messages.

Nokia S60 Feature Pack 2 Nokia S60 Feature Pack 2

Nokia S60 Feature Pack 2 Nokia S60 Feature Pack 2

This application is similar to Smart Search, which is used in Samsung devices. However Search 4.10 is much higher concerning its abilities. The convenience in use also stands on a principally different level. The Search becomes even more accessible after integrating it into the active stand-by mode.

The menu

The menu can be displayed in four different ways. These are the list, the grid and two three dimensional appearances: Horseshoe and V-shaped. The latter ones are not so convenient in use, but they look quite interesting. In both cases there is a line of small shortcuts of respective submenu at the bottom (V-shaped) or aside (Horseshoe) of the screen when the menu is activated. The number of insertions is unlimited. In order to move into a particular submenu it is enough to press down the navigation button or shift the joystick to the right. After doing so the content of the submenu is shown with the big icons. Moving backwards is also done by pressing navigation button. Two of these appearances are worth of presence only if there is a Navi Wheel present in device. In this case the navigation is much simplified.

Nokia S60 Feature Pack 2 Nokia S60 Feature Pack 2

Nokia S60 Feature Pack 2 Nokia S60 Feature Pack 2

Nokia S60 Feature Pack 2 Nokia S60 Feature Pack 2

There is also an optional feature of icon animation. No matter if the icon is responsible for launching of the one application or it is a folder there is always a semicircular icon at the top right corner in case there is an application that is launched and works in the background.

It is possible to create own folders, rename or delete the categories that are present, and move the icons as you want. Such a customization is one of the advantages of the smart phones based on S60.

Multimedia menu

The presence of such a menu does not depend on FP2 functionality. It is hard to find such menu in the business devices. This is mostly prerogative of Nokia Nseries. Calling of this menu is done by pressing the separate button. There is such a button in all multimedia smart phones beginning from Nokia N81.

There are seven categories:

• Music
• Videos
• Gallery
• Games
• Contacts
• Internet
• Maps

The list is not configurable. You cannot add new categories, all you can do is just sort them in your own way. Each category has a submenu with the quick launch points. In the Contacts, for example, the list of the most frequently dialed persons can be displayed. That is how there is no need to open the address book every time you want to make a call. It is possible to send a message, to make a call to a person, to delete it from the list, move it and so on. There is also a Caller ID mini-picture shown (if it was set) next to the person's name. Other insertions provide the access to corresponding points and every point has a mini-picture (the latest picture in the Gallery, the album art in the player, etc.).

Mainly the multimedia menu became much more convenient in use and more informative. In cooperation with the Navi Wheel navigation such appearance looks quite ergonomic. In most cases it can even replace the main menu.

WLAN Wizard, Bluetooth, USB

We will review separately all the communication abilities of every smart phone separately, since they may differ from each other. Now let's introduce the interface settings.

There is always the WLAN Wizard present if the device has a Wi-Fi module. It's quite convenient and simple assistant that helps to establish a connection. There aren't many connection options. When the net is located you are offered to establish the connection, to set the default hot spot. There is a network filter present as an option. There are following security standards: WEP, WPA, WPA 2. Also the interval between scanning for presence WLAN network can be set.

Nokia S60 Feature Pack 2 Nokia S60 Feature Pack 2

Nokia S60 Feature Pack 2 Nokia S60 Feature Pack 2

Nokia S60 Feature Pack 2 Nokia S60 Feature Pack 2

The latest models use USB v2.0 standard. There is also a Mass Storage mode support. It is up to the user how to use the device: as a disk drive, PC Suite, Image Print, and Media Player. The internal flash memory (if it's present) is seen as well as the memory card. After establishing the connection with the PC as a disc drive the device does not switch to offline profile and the phone functionality is still available.

Nokia S60 Feature Pack 2 Nokia S60 Feature Pack 2

Bluetooth version is 2.0 + EDR. All main Blutooth profiles are supported:

• A2DP
• Audio/Video Remote Control
• Basic Imaging
• Dial-up Networking
• File Transfer
• Generic Access
• Generic Object Exchange
• Handsfree
• Headset
• HID
• Object Push
• SIM Access
• Serial Port

A2DP profile support allows using wireless stereo headset with the device. Everything is quite normal and there are no problems using it. It is possible to set the phone to be discoverable by other Bluetooth devices. The phone has also the list of blocked devices.

Home Media

Home Media application allows working with other devices using UnPNP technology. It has been sufficiently modified and starting from Nokia N81 model got bigger functionality in comparison with previous versions (N95, N93). Before you could only get access to the content located on the other device, now the smart phone can play the content of other devices. We have tested given functionality with the PC as well as with another smart phone N95. There were no problems using this technology. There is the point in the Gallery menu saying "Show through the home network" that allows displaying or playing selected files on the other device.

3-D Tones

The models equipped with the stereo speakers there have a special 3-D Tones application. Here you can adjust the sound trajectory, overflow rate, reverberation and other parameters. The effect with the high quality speakers is quite obvious. Tuning the sound settings can really change the sound perception when the phone is ringing.

N-Gage

All the multimedia computers referring to Nokia Nseries product line and also other multimedia smart phones have N-Gage gaming service support. Nokia N81 was the first one having such a support. All the application abilities coincide with those of Nokia N81, that is why we won't repeat ourselves and you can refer to the respective review. Fortunately the N-Gage functionality has had detailed look in that review.

Nokia N81 review: N-Gage revival

The game can be displayed in portrait as well as in album layout. Multimedia keys can also be used, of course if such keys are present. There are several explanations to this fact: first of all, N-Gage is a universal platform, and it is supported by completely different devices, that is why there is no need to adapt it to abilities of particular devices. Pre-installed demo versions of games are similar the games in Nokia N81. These games are FIFA07, Asphalt 3, Space Impact Light.

Nokia Video Centre

The Video centre application has remained its functionality. It can still search for video clips, access, upload and play them on the phone. There are approximately fifteen various video services available at the moment. Reuters news, official program strips of organizations (Unicef, for instance) and video pranks (like Stupid video) are among them. One of the most popular video exchange portals YouTube will soon be available for the download (now it is on the beta version stage). Using this service is maximally comfortable via Wi-Fi connection. However it is still possible to use the service via GPRS or EDGE connection, since the video files are optimized under the devices' dimensions and everything looks just perfect. Besides it is always possible to finish the download later.

There are various options available. For example, there is a content lock feature preventing accidental file deletion, or a parental lock function keeping the selected files from being watched by children, active thumbnails for the video clips and so on. The service got successful, convenient and easy to use. Over again it should be mentioned that the application has been developed in detail. For example, if you haven't finished watching the video then the next time you turn on the phone the application would offer you two choices whether to start watching the video from the beginning or to continue watching from the moment where the video has been stopped. Since any video strip, working on RSS video 2.0 formats can easily get into the video service, the fact that the list of services would considerably get wider is quite obvious and it should be expected very soon.

Display settings, themes

Every device has a number of pre-installed themes. It is possible to set the screen saver in the form of the date and time (by default), text and animated clip (every theme has its own screen saver). Playback and backlighting duration can be set manually and it makes sense to set those two values equally.

Profiles, audio-themes

Profiles have always been the strongest sides of S60 devices. Everything is adjustable and it is possible to create unlimited number of user profiles. Initially there are six adjustable settings: selection of the type of notification, turning on and off of the person's name playback with the built-in synthesizer, sound volume changing and so on.

Nokia S60 Feature Pack 2 Nokia S60 Feature Pack 2

Nokia S60 Feature Pack 2 Nokia S60 Feature Pack 2

In spite of the separate profiles adjustment there are also so called audio themes. In other words it is possible to set a number of sounds corresponding to the different events like the calendar messages, incoming calls, alarm clock and so on.

Call service

Contact book is also one of the strongest advantages of the smart phones based on S60. There are no changes related to FP2 functionality. In different devices there can be just several changes concerning the sequence of fields, the visualization. There shouldn't be expected any other changes. The number of contacts can be limited just with the free space in the telephone, that is absolutely typical to all smart phones. There are 3 fields with the typical labeling for the mobile phone numbers, video calls, internet phone numbers, faxes, e-mails, contact addresses in the Internet, mailing addresses, and there is one typical field for the pager, name, surname, note and the date. First, last and middle name fields (also as the Birthday date and some other fields) are presented as just one field, while the number of the other fields can be adjusted according to the user, i.e. you can add new fields as well as delete those which you don't use. The limit to the number of symbols in the fields is 50 symbols per the field. The mailing field includes 7 subfields. Of course, the main feature of the Symbian phone book hasn't gone anywhere: you can still rename the fields according to your will. Not only the phone number can be standard but also the e-mail, the video conference phone number, SMS, MMS and РТТ.

Nokia S60 Feature Pack 2 Nokia S60 Feature Pack 2

There are 3 variants of the contacts displaying:

• Surname Name
• Surname Name
• Name Surname

There is also the search within the phone book. The search for the contacts is not made within only one field. The limit to the number of symbols in the line comes up to 40 symbols.

The groups are presented in the separate tab (the navigation is provided by shifting navigation buttons), there is own melody for each group (the users' melodies have priority though).

Nokia S60 Feature Pack 2 Nokia S60 Feature Pack 2

Nokia S60 Feature Pack 2 Nokia S60 Feature Pack 2

The interesting fact is that it is possible to pronounce the name of the caller using the built-in synthesizer. In other words, firstly the melody is played once, then the name is pronounced and only after all of this there is the ringing. Nothing is needed to be done by the user, except turning this feature on. The voice dialing also works with the help of this synthesizer. This means that there is no need in voice marking. All is needed is just to pronounce the name from the contact list. The speech recognition is done quite well and in most cases the marking is recognized from the first try. There are some problems using it in the street or in the noisy environment. The quick dial didn't bring anything unexpected, everything is quite standard.

Nokia S60 Feature Pack 2 Nokia S60 Feature Pack 2

Nokia S60 Feature Pack 2 Nokia S60 Feature Pack 2

The picture of the calling person displayed in full screen is becoming the standard platform function. Previously it was possible only with the help of the third party application. The picture is shown during the incoming as well as during the outgoing call. In case no picture was set, the standard for each theme image is displayed. Apart from that there is also VideoID function. The video clip will be shown in case in was set to the person in the contact list. In case both the picture and the video clip was set to the person, the priority is after the video, however you will also hear the sound from the video, that sometimes is not so interesting as it could be. The video format used to display the call is mp4.

Calling list

The calling list works as it did before. There are 3 types of phone calls (numbers dialed, received and missed calls). There is no single list of all the calls like it is present in new devices based on Series40v3. Shifting the navigation button you can switch between different calling groups. The calling log can save the information about all the calls during the month (this is the maximal term, but it is possible to set it lower, down to one or ten days). Every event can be reviewed in detail. Various filters can serve a good help when working with the log.

Apart from the list of voice calls there is also a list of data transfer. There is a separate counter of overall time, the last call for each type of connection. And it is possible to calculate the cost of the conversations.

Nokia S60 Feature Pack 2 Nokia S60 Feature Pack 2

Messaging service

The phone supports SMS, MMS and E-mail. There is nothing extraordinary in the way those functions are implemented, however everything necessary is present. These are templates, T9, drafts, saving the message to the memory card (for SMS as well as for MMS). The type of the message is defined automatically by the default. However it is possible to choose preferred type from the four available ones.

The text typing is done in the same way it was done before. Switching between the languages is done through the context menu. All other functions like switching to the capital letter, to the digits, text copying and pasting is done by the # button. The font size is selected from the four available sizes. The copy and subject fields are now also available in text messages, but they can always be removed if it is needed. Similarly to the Series 40 there is the popping up line of quick access icons that is used to access the content to be attached to the message.

Switching between received, sent and the other types of messages is done by shifting sideward the joystick or the navigation button. This is very convenient since you don't have to return back to the messages menu in order to access the folder in the neighborhood. The corresponding tabs with the title are shown at the top of the screen.

Nokia S60 Feature Pack 2 Nokia S60 Feature Pack 2

Nokia S60 Feature Pack 2 Nokia S60 Feature Pack 2

Reports about the delivery of messages are saved separately. They can be deleted one by one as well as altogether. Meanwhile it is possible to choose for what messages (only for the SMS or also for the MMS) the reports are needed.

The MMS service is very convenient to use. The size of the message can come up to 300 Kb. It is possible to attach a picture, a sound (voice recording) and a video clip. Among the MMS options there is the option of the image size selection (initial, small and big). The MMS text can be placed at the beginning as well as in the end of the message. The address field can contain the only one line with the person's contact or can have two additional fields. These fields are the "Subject" and the "Copy".

Nokia S60 Feature Pack 2 Nokia S60 Feature Pack 2

The viewmode selection in the context menu is available while creating MMS messages. In this case the device will display four templates. These are Picture (images slideshow), Video (clips slideshow), Mini-pictures (slides with the 2 images) and a Template with the title (every slide has its own title). The templates are easy to use and allow creating beautiful and animated messages.

E-mail client supports SMTP/POP3/IMAP4 protocols. There is a wizard launched every time when a new mail box account is created. This wizard makes a good help to the process of creation of e-mail account. In other words hints pop up while the mail box is being created, some part of the information has already been automatically filled, all is needed is to set the type of the mail box and the server type.

Nokia S60 Feature Pack 2 Nokia S60 Feature Pack 2

Nokia S60 Feature Pack 2 Nokia S60 Feature Pack 2

Nokia S60 Feature Pack 2 Nokia S60 Feature Pack 2

There is an option that allows checking the e-mail automatically according to the time table. There are three types of e-mail download: just the subject, the download of the e-mail smaller of the maximal size, and the message with attachments. The size of the download also varies. It is possible to set the download of all incoming messages as well as their particular quantity (any number of letters).

Nokia S60 Feature Pack 2 Nokia S60 Feature Pack 2

Nokia S60 Feature Pack 2 Nokia S60 Feature Pack 2

Nokia S60 Feature Pack 2 Nokia S60 Feature Pack 2

So called sound messages can also be sent and created since this option is also supported. there is a big icon in the text input field when the sound message is being created. By pressing this icon the voice recorder is launched and the record starts. The record is limited to two and half minutes. When the record is finished the icon changes into another one. In case you need to record the new audio clip for the message, the one which has already been recorded is removed by pressing the C button.

The built-in synthesizer can also read the incoming messages. The way the texts are read are worse than it is in 5500 Sport. And the reason is in the well developed system of controls and settings. Among the reading options there is a pronunciation volume and reading speed (from 1 to 10). Also there is no ability to set the default folder which would be used to read files. In other words the phone can read only text files, however it would be very interesting if the built-in synthesizer could read the e-mail messages, and even copying these files to the "Incoming messages" folder do not help the situation – the program sees only text files. Still this is not the main disadvantage. The fact that it is necessary to run the application in order to make the phone read the message makes no worth in using this option. That is why it is easier to read the message than to make the phone read it instead of the person.

PIM

The PIM has the following set of applications: Converter, Notes, Sound recorder and Calculator. The converter and the calculator don't differ from those in other models. You can sill select the type of conversion (the list of units) and rates of exchange. The calculator is maximally simplified. There are only the main operations with the numbers present.

The alarm clock is adjusted quite well, unlike in the other devices which don't have any Feature Packs. Apart from the one-time signal for the particular period of time it is possible to set the alarm clock to work every particular week day, in business days, weekly or daily. Also it is possible to set the specific day for the alarm clock. There won't be any chance to set the days for the alarm clock randomly. However it is possible to set any week days except the Sunday as the business days for the alarm clock and that is how the problem is partially solved. Any melody can be assigned as the alarm clock signal.

The calendar can be displayed in four different ways. It may show months, weeks, the day (the day is scheduled on a hourly basis) and the tasks. If case the calendar is displayed in the latter way the list of events and the time of their completion is displayed. In addition to this the information about the number of uncompleted tasks is shown in the active stand-by mode. The events are divided into the categories and each category has its own icon. It is also possible to delete the old tasks (the choice is whether to delete all of them or just till the particular date).

There are four event types in the calendar. These are meetings, notes, anniversaries and tasks. The place (theme), the date and (or) the date of beginning and completion, the melody, the number of tone repeats and the type of synchronization (the private or the general) can be added to the event description. In case there is a task for a specific date the corresponding day on the calendar is displayed in color. After moving the cursor to that date the list of tasks for that current day pops up. The number of tone repeats (daily, weekly, etc.) can also be set in case the new event is added. Besides the time of finishing the repeats of the event can also be set. Generally there is everything needed for an average user to take care after his or her tasks.

There is a pre-installed application QuickOffice used to view the Microsoft Office files, such as Word(*.doc), Excel (*.xls), PowerPoint(*.ptt). it is possible to view the files of various Office versions (97, 2000, and XP), however there is no full compatibility between the different versions. The feature allowing the editing of the documents has been left to the Nokia Eseries devices, and it doesn't depend on FP1 functionality. That is why if you want to edit the documents you will need to install the full version of the QuickOffice.

The sound recorder is also standard for the company devices. It has been maximally simplified. The maximum recording time is 1 hour. There is only one option allowing to choose the folder of file saving. The sound recorder also allows recording the phone conversations.

Nokia Web Browser

The FP 1 main feature is that there is an updated Internet browser. In the FP2 the browser has been left unchanged. The browser in Nokia devices is still the most functional on the market. The browser is based on the Konqueror – one of the most popular projects for these days. The Apple - Safari Web Browser is also based on some components of the Konqueror. Nokia Web Browser supports everything that is needed to browse the Internet without any problems: HTML 4.01(full-fledged work with the tables, frames and forms), JavaScript 1.5, CSS 1 и 2, RSS. The browser has been translated and localized to 46 languages, however not all the languages are supported by the phone. The integrated language pack allows the device to switch between the languages, the language selection depending on the sales region.

The following image formats are supported: GIF, JPEG, BMP, WBMP, PNG. The phone supports the following audio formats MIDI, WAV, MP3, ACC, EACC+, AMR-NB, AMR-WB, Real Audio. The browser uses the security protocols and algorithms coming with S60 platform and the Symbian OS.

The web site can be displayed in the form of the mini-map. Meanwhile it is possible to move within the page. There is a red frame that shows what part of the page will be shown after returning to the standard preview mode. The browser performance is very high. There are no "snubs" during the work of this mode. However you will need to wait several seconds in order to clearly display the mini-map. In addition to this it is possible to display the mini-map over the main image at the moment of page scrolling. In this case the mini-map is transparent and it lets to determine your location on the page.

The history displaying is done in original and beautiful way. The thumbnails of previously visited web pages are displayed here. There is a page title at the top of the screen in case it is difficult to determine the visited page after looking at the thumbnail.

The bookmark service had a detailed development. It is has quite enough functionality for the normal work. There are two types of bookmarks: general and adaptive bookmarks. The general bookmarks are created by the user. Any web page can be added to the general bookmarks. While the adaptive bookmarks are created according to the most frequently visited web-sites (several pages of the one web site are automatically grouped together). The most visited web sites are shown at the top of the list. The adaptive bookmarks may be copied to the general ones. Both types of bookmarks may be sent via SMS.

The navigation and control system is well developed and it is comfortable to use it. Besides the digital keypad serves the role of the quick access to the functions of the browser.

The main difference in comparison with the previous version is that the following options are present:

• The page can be saved
• Pictures can be saved separately
• Password Manager (the passwords auto filling)
• Flash Lite 2.0 plug-in
• There is an automatic news line update (RSS and Atom formats)
• Optimized cash work
• Using the browser by the thirs party applications; the browser became the only one which is used in the system, it replaced the old browser used in S60 platform.

The changes that have been mentioned are quite sufficient. The browser has been patched and hopefully it will continue its improvement. For example there are some problems with the text selection and copying; the self-reliant choice of new link opening is not present (the choice between opening the link in the same window or in the new one). There aren't too many complaints on the browser work. At these days this browser is one of the best on the market of the mobile phones, based on the S60 platform.

Photos

There is a new Photos application appeared in the new FP2 devices. It is a distinctive add-on to the current Gallery application, which has become habitual for the users. Besides the interface of the latter one hasn't gone anywhere. The Photos application combines several categories together such like camera photos, images done in each month, albums, downloaded photos and Tags. It is possible to view the photos in the usual way, but also there is the circular listing of the thumbnails. Having the Navi Wheel gives a great pleasure, especially if there is a large number of material.

The process visualization is on the high level. The images can be sorted according to the date, name, the size or the file format. The user can also create unlimited number of own folders in the phone memory, flash memory or in the memory card. The print settings are also adjusted in here. Several files can be selected in the list pressing the # button. There is also the slideshow present. There is the interval between the slides and musical support options among the slideshow settings. In other words slideshow possibilities are very big in all FP2 multimedia devices.

The Tags is the most interesting part. Anything can be set as a Tag. Specific photos may have their own tag and there is always the number of tags shown under each tag during their preview.

MP3 player

The user interface of the player has been fixed and it is completely different from the previous devices' players. Such a player organization can be seen in all the new devices based on the S60v3 Feature Pack 1 and 2. The difference is just in the elements layout on the screen. The control is quite convenient. The device's control buttons and navigation buttons are both used for rewind, play and pause. There is a scheme shown on the display to let the user know what buttons should be pressed in order to use the player functionality. The artist and track name are also displayed during the stand-by mode. The volume control is done with the help of the sidekeys.

Among the player setting we should mention five pre-installed options of the eight-banded equalizer with the ability to create unlimited number of equalizer presets by the user. The eight-banded equalizer becomes standard for all the multimedia devices based on FP2. Previously there was the five-banded equalizer. There is also ability to regulate the sound balance, expanded stereo sound, low-frequency amplifying, reverberation. There are several options are available: the sorting according to the artist, the album, the genre, etc., the track repeat and shuffle. There is also the Album Arts function available. This function allows displaying the corresponding album art for the track. The album cover is large enough. The Album Art realization for the S60 FP2 devices is the best on the market. There is a visualization mode available in the player. It looks very beautiful, but it lowers down the battery lifetime in the playback mode. Either the phone or the Home Media network can serve as the player. There is a new item in the "music" menu. It is called the Nokia Music Store. This shall be discussed later.

There are two types of the radios the Visual Radio and the Internet Radio. The Visual Radio supports the visual effects (the album art, for instance), while the Internet Radio is a network service. The latter one is quite demanded service, especially in the places with the big number of the Wi-Fi hot spots or the 3G networking.

Nokia Music Store and other services.

There is a new point in the "music" menu. It is called the Nokia Music Store. There are over millions of tracks from various artists in this store. The cost of the track is 1 euro, the album costs 10 euros, the monthly subscription for synchronization with the downloaded music is 10 euro. The price is standard for the network providers in Europe. Time will tell how successful was the project. There is an option that appears during the playback saying "go to the music store" that automatically sends you to the www.music.nokia.com address. The Music Store offers wide abilities like the track search, accessing the ratings, statistics, the list of scheduled downloads, trial playback, and synchronization with the PC via Windows Media Player. The service has already been started, however now it is available only in the Great Britain. The tack is downloaded in the wma format. The good thing is that it is possible to download the tack that has been bought for the second time in case the file has been lost.

Navigation, Nokia Maps 2.0

The announce of the new version of the navigation service, that is included in the OVI - Nokia Maps 2.0 group took place in the Mobile World Congress 2008. The changes didn't include just the surface of the interface, but it was completely improved. It became more convenient, obvious and informative. The Nokia Maps 2.0 application is compatible both with the FP2 and the FP1 devices. The application is available for the download at http://nokia.com/betalabs.

One of the main differences is that there is a separate navigation for the walkers (Walk mode). The company developers say that it unique. There are voice prompting for the walkers, the step-by-step visual guide (for example, the footsteps), the movement direction cam be determined by the built-in compass (in case it is present, of course). The detail of the map is maximal. Not only roads and sidewalks but also the paths in the parks are shown.
